BNI’s Sustainable Financing Hits Rp 197 Trillion in 2025
Jakarta. State-owned lender BNI recently reported that its sustainable financing portfolio hit Rp 197 trillion ($11.7 billion) in 2025.
This makes up 22% of BNI's total loans, marking the company's strengthening role in promoting financing aligned with sustainability principles and long-term risk management.
BNI Deputy President Director Alexandra Askandar stated that BNI's sustainable financing portfolio is distributed to various strategic sectors, ranging from micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), renewable energy, natural resource management and land use, to water and waste management.
"This achievement reflects BNI's commitment to driving business growth in line with sustainability principles," Alexandra was quoted as saying in a statement.
Throughout 2025, BNI is strengthening its sustainability implementation through the three Sustainability Pillars outlined in the ESG Blueprint: Sustainable Finance, Corporate Sustainability, and Inclusion & Resilience. These three pillars integrate the ESG framework with BNI's five sustainability pillars as the foundation for the comprehensive implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles across all business lines.
From a financing perspective, BNI continues to expand its sustainable portfolio through the development of Sustainability-Linked Loan (SLL) and green financing schemes. These schemes are designed to encourage improved ESG performance for borrowers while supporting emissions reduction efforts towards the net zero emissions target by 2060.
BNI also issued a Rp 5 trillion Sustainability Bond in 2025, which received an idAAA rating, as well as a Rp 5 trillion Green Bond back in 2022. The proceeds from these instruments were allocated for environmentally and socially responsible financing in accordance with national and international standards.
BNI is also strengthening its advisory role for borrowers in the transition to sustainable business practices. The company launched an ESG Advisory Playbook for the palm oil subsector — making BNI the first bank in Indonesia to develop such a guide — and provided technical assistance to borrowers in the agriculture, forestry, and other land use sector, construction and real estate, and transportation and logistics sectors for the implementation of the Indonesian sustainable finance taxonomy.
On the operational side, BNI implements the Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) concept with the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R) principles at five head offices. Throughout 2025, the company recycled 611.5 tons of solid waste, equivalent to 100% of the total solid waste generated.
"This step is part of BNI's efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its operational activities," Alexandra said.
