Indonesia Reaffirms NZE 2060 Goal at COP30, PLN Leads Energy Shift
Jakarta/Belem. The Indonesian government reaffirmed its commitment to leading global efforts to mitigate climate change and accelerate the transition toward Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or sooner through fair and inclusive collaboration.
The statement was delivered by Hashim Djojohadikusumo, the Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Indonesia for Climate and Energy, who represented President Prabowo Subianto during the Leaders Summit at the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, on Thursday, Nov. 6.
“Indonesia came to Belém with a clear message: we remain committed to strengthening our national climate commitments and are ready to work with other countries to realize real, inclusive, and ambitious climate action,” Hashim stressed.
Hashim said President Prabowo had reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to the Paris Agreement to achieve NZE no later than 2060 or sooner. He added that Indonesia is targeting 8 percent economic growth through a sustainable development strategy that has been defined and consistently implemented.
He also explained that in its Second Nationally Determined Contribution (SNDC), Indonesia aims to reduce emissions by 1.2 to 1.5 gigatons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) by 2035. This effort will be supported by increasing the renewable energy mix to 23 percent by 2030 and developing new technologies such as nuclear energy as part of the transition toward green energy.
“Recently, President Prabowo enacted Presidential Regulation No. 109 on Waste to Energy and Presidential Regulation No. 110 on Carbon Economic Value. These two regulations serve as an important foundation for building a national decarbonization system and strengthening greenhouse gas emission control,” Hashim added.
The commitment was further underscored by Minister of Environment/Head of the Environmental Control Agency, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, who emphasized Indonesia’s direction toward a fair green economy transformation.
“COP30 is a momentum to prove that green development is not only possible but also beneficial. Indonesia builds leadership through concrete action, not mere promises,” he said.
Hanif added that the principle of climate justice must be the foundation of every energy transition policy.
“Climate justice means ensuring no one is left behind. Indonesia is ready to lead by example, integrating policy, science, and social values for a better future,” Hanif continued.
Meanwhile, President Director of state utility PT PLN (Persero), Darmawan Prasodjo, stated that PLN is prepared to support and realize President Prabowo’s vision for national energy transition through the implementation of the 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL).
“About three months ago, under the direction of President Prabowo Subianto and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Indonesia released a new RUPTL. Under this plan, Indonesia aims to add 69.5 gigawatts (GW) of power generation capacity over the next ten years, with around 76 percent coming from renewable energy and storage,” Darmawan said.
Darmawan added that the RUPTL is a strategic roadmap for PLN to support the acceleration of the clean energy transition toward NZE by 2060 or sooner. The plan’s implementation aims not only to meet reliable electricity needs but also to promote the development of green jobs, expand electricity access to the nation’s outermost, frontier, and remote regions (3T), and strengthen national energy security.
“By prioritizing renewable energy, PLN is committed to making the national electricity system cleaner, more inclusive, and more sustainable. We believe that through synergy with all stakeholders, Indonesia’s ambitious energy transition targets can be achieved concretely and on time,” Darmawan concluded.
