Solar-Powered Pumps Help PIS Bring 5 Million Liters of Clean Water to Remote Labuan Bajo Village
Jakarta. Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) successfully distributed nearly five million liters of clean water to residents of Golomori Village, a remote area in Labuan Bajo, over the past year. This achievement was made possible through the installation of solar-powered water pumps, which have reduced electricity consumption by 4,000 kWh.
Labuan Bajo, one of Indonesia’s premier tourist destinations, still has areas that lack full access to basic needs, particularly clean water. The availability of clean water is also a crucial factor in sustaining agricultural productivity, which remains the main livelihood for many residents.
To address this challenge, since last year, PIS has partnered with Komodo Water --a social enterprise focusing on clean water access and sustainable water management in remote areas-- to operate solar-powered water pumps in Compang Ra’ong Hamlet, Golomori Village. This technology was designed to channel water to seven agricultural demonstration plots (demplots) managed by a local farming group, which currently has 20 members and is expected to grow in the future.
“We support the government’s efforts to improve community welfare, especially for those still living in remote areas with limited access to clean water, so they can maximize agricultural yields, which are the main source of livelihood for residents of Compang Hamlet,” said PIS Corporate Secretary, Muhammad Baron.
He believes that the distribution of clean water can boost local livelihoods, from farming to fishing. Starting with clean water provision, PIS plans to develop a supply chain ecosystem to support these livelihoods. This will allow residents not only to produce, but also to supply their agricultural products --such as vegetables, mustard greens, water spinach, and chili-- outside the village, even reaching hotels and lodges in Labuan Bajo, which has now become a renowned tourist destination.
This program is part of the BerSEAnergi for the Ocean initiative, PIS’s overarching corporate social and environmental responsibility (TJSL) framework, which integrates marine ecosystem preservation with improving the welfare of coastal communities. One of its main pillars is the “Energi Berdikari Village,” which focuses on providing access to renewable and sustainable energy in communities.
Furthermore, the program aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and Goal 13 (Climate Action). It also fulfills the three core aspects of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
The success of the program in Golomori demonstrates that collaboration with local communities and implementing partners can deliver targeted solutions. With this step, PIS not only helps meet basic needs but also fosters sustainable local economic growth. The combination of environmentally friendly technology and community empowerment is the key to building a more resilient and productive future.
