Jakarta. The Manpower Ministry said Wednesday that Indonesia's online ride-hailing drivers will get their Eid bonuses this year, sparking good news for the informal workers that amply contribute to the country's economy.

Manpower Minister Yassierli said that he had spoken with the ride-hailing apps in recent months. He admitted that the talks had gone well and resulted in a mutual commitment. The government is now drafting a circular that will regulate the Eid bonus, including the distribution mechanism and other technical aspects.

"The [ride-hailing] platforms' responses have been positive, and they are committed. We are just waiting for the circular," Yassierli said in Jakarta.

The government also promised to make improvements to the Eid bonus rollout.

Yassierli also has some good news for Indonesia's private sector workers. He highlighted that workers must earn their bonuses no later than seven days before Eid.

"Companies that fail to pay the bonuses will face sanctions," Yassierli said.

"But we are still coordinating things with the State Secretariat. We will make a public announcement later."

Enthusiasm always soars high whenever Eid approaches. During Eid, workers typically receive a bonus equal to one month's wage as the period is synonymous with homecoming travels. The Indonesian Trade Union Confederation (KSPI) recently revealed that many ride-hailing drivers only received Rp 50,000 ($2.97) in bonus, a tiny fraction of the promised Rp 1 million ($59.46).

"Please, at least give the drivers 75% of what they earn in a year," KSPI chair Said Iqbal stated.

Eid is expected to fall in the third week of March.
